Case Study: High-Strength Stainless Steel Webnet Pedestrian Barriers – Lyon Zoo, France
Project Overview
  • Location: Lyon, France (Small-scale Zoological Park)
  • Product: High-Tensile 316 Stainless Steel Webnet
  • Webnet size:2mm rope diameter, 35x55mm aperture
  • Application: Safety barriers for zoo pedestrian walkways
  • Total Area: 660 m²
The Challenge

Zoo environments demand safety solutions that protect visitors without obstructing views of the animals. For this project at a Lyon zoo, the requirements were exceptionally strict. The pedestrian walkway barriers needed to withstand significant impact—specifically, heavy objects falling or striking the mesh—without deforming or developing holes. Additionally, to prevent small children or animals from squeezing through, the gap between the stainless steel WEBNET and the top/bottom handrails had to be kept under 10 cm.

Our Solution

We engineered a high-transparency, impact-resistant barrier system using marine-grade 316 stainless steel, ensuring longevity against outdoor elements. To meet the rigorous safety standards, we specified a robust construction plan:

  • Mesh Specification: We utilized a 2.0mm diameter wire rope woven into a 35mm x 55mm aperture. This specific configuration provides the necessary tensile strength to absorb impact without permanent deformation, ensuring the structural integrity of the fence line even under stress.
  • Perimeter Reinforcement: To anchor the stainless steel webnet securely and maintain the strict clearance requirements, we employed 8mm diameter stainless steel cables for edge fastening. These thicker cables act as a high-strength border, allowing the installers to keep the mesh tensioned tightly against the handrails, successfully limiting gaps to less than 10 cm.
  • Flexible Design: The inherent flexibility of the stainless steel Webnet allowed for seamless installation along the curves of the walkways, providing a continuous safety shield without compromising the park’s natural aesthetics.
Key Features & Benefits
  • Impact Resistance: The 2.0mm high-tensile webnet prevents deformation and tearing upon impact, ensuring long-term security.
  • Child & Animal Safety: Rigid edge cabling (8mm) guarantees gaps remain under 10cm, eliminating pinch points or escape routes.
  • Unobstructed Views: The high-transparency design (35x55mm) preserves the visitor experience, offering clear sightlines into animal enclosures.
  • Durability: 316 stainless steel provides maximum resistance to corrosion, essential for humid zoo environments.
Results

The completed 660 m² installation provides a virtually invisible yet impenetrable webnet safety barrier throughout the zoo’s walkways. The stainless steel webnet system passed all safety inspections, demonstrating zero deflection under pressure and maintaining perfect clearance tolerances. It stands as a model of how high-strength engineering can blend seamlessly with zoological landscape design.
